Social networking accounts for 10% of our total time online

According to the latest Nielsen report, 67% of the global internet population are now using social networks and Blogs. Social networking and Blogs are are now the 4th most popular online activity.

The time spent by users on these activities is growing at 3 times the rate of overall internet usage and accounts for 10% of the total time spent online.

The biggest audience growth of social media in 2008 was 35-49 year olds. 

Surprisingly, in the UK over 2 million people had actually used their mobile phone to visit a social networking site. Internationally, Facebook, the world's most popular social network, is now visited monthly by almost 30% of people online.

The conclusion is that social networking sites and blogs, also known as "member communities" are growing at an extremely fast pace and have now overtaken personal email in terms of popularity. However Search, Portals and PC Software remain in the top three most popular activities, according to the report.
